Alternative Practices Assist Landowners with Buffer Compliance

Alternative Practices Assist Landowners with Buffer Compliance

October 01, 2018 by

The West Otter Tail SWCD recently completed work on a series of 8 water and sediment control basins that will reduce over 44 tons of sediment and over 37 lbs of phosphorus from reaching the Otter Tail River on an annual basis. SWCD staff were able to work with the landowner and renter to address a significant erosion problem occurring in this field adjacent to the Otter Tail River.

Through the Board of Water and Soil Resources the SWCD was the recipient of over $200,000 to assist landowners with installation of buffers and alternative practices required by the MN Buffer Law. These funds are available to landowner at a flat rate of $200/acre for installation of a cool season vegetated buffer, $300/acre for a warm season/native vegetated buffer, and 75% cost assistance on designed and installed alternative practices.

Reminder November 1, 2018 is the deadline to have all buffers on public ditches installed or a plan in place with the SWCD office.

For more information regarding alternative practice installation contact our office at 218-998-5300.
